Construction works to triple the Port Hedland International Airport departures lounge and refresh the terminal commence this Friday 22 August.
Mayor Kelly Howlett said the works marked the second stage of terminal renovations.
“Our newly renovated arrivals area toilets opened in early August with new fixtures and fittings, additional cubicles and a fresh coat of paint reflective of our stunning Pilbara sunsets,” she said.
“The next stage of the $1.2million renovations will see passenger experience significantly improved.
“We are combining the café and bar with the departures lounge so passengers can relax near the boarding gate, rather than rush from check-in to the café to security screening and then onto their plane.
“The outside café area will be enclosed and new flooring installed inside the café. Internal walls will also be removed to open the space and improve visual amenity.
“The terminal will be repainted which will inject colour into the space – passengers will be reminded of the Pilbara’s stunning sunsets as well as our ocean lifestyle.
“From Friday smoking will not be permitted in the outside café area or along the front of the terminal – a designated smoking area is provided on the verge area.“
I am pleased that our airport will now be a smoke-free zone consistent with many other airport and public spaces.
Mayor Howlett reminded passengers that all major works would occur overnight and all flights and services will continue as normal
“The Town and our contractors JAXON are committed to ensuring minimal disruption to passengers and staff during the renovation period.
“The departures area toilets will be closed while they are renovated – the arrivals area toilets will be available to ensure there are always a set of toilets available to the public.
“The outside café area will also be closed for three weeks from this Friday as new flooring is laid.
“I would like to thank passengers, meeters and greeters, and airport staff for their patience during the construction period – the end result will be something we can all be proud of as a welcoming gateway to our stunning region.”
