A new taxi zone has been introduced at Port Hedland International Airport to make passenger pick up and drop off easier and to improve traffic flow.
Mayor Kelly Howlett said the Town of Port Hedland had introduced the new zone in the short term car park in response to feedback from Hedland’s taxi companies.
“We know that the front of the terminal can become congested at peak times – that’s why we’ve acted to introduce a new zone in the short term car park,” Mayor Howlett said.
“This will improve traffic flow at the front of the terminal and provide a designated area for taxis to drop off and pick up.
“It also provides more room and will allow additional taxis into the precinct to pick up passengers.
To access the taxi zone, passengers will need to walk across the pedestrian crossing into the short term car park and turn right – taxis will be waiting to take passengers to their destination. Taxis will also drop off passengers in the same location.
Mayor Howlett said the new system would be trialled over the coming months and will provide more pick up and drop off bays for regular vehicles.
“We are introducing the new zone as a trial and we are happy to receive feedback from passengers and the drivers as to how it is working.”
Feedback can be provided via email to the Town’s Airport Development Officer at [email protected].
Community members are reminded that the pick up/drop off zone at the front of the terminal has a time limit of two minutes, and the first 30 minutes in the short term carpark are free of charge.
