Placemaking Workshop Inspires Innovated Ideas for an Iconic Airport

31 October 2013

Creative and inspiring ideas were discussed at Monday night’s airport placemaking workshop, such as introducing free wifi in the terminal, having a children’s play area and installing public artwork by local and Indigenous artists.

Thirty five community members attended the workshop to gather ideas for the redevelopment of the Port Hedland International Airport.

Mayor Kelly Howlett thanked everyone who attended the workshop and encouraged those who couldn’t attend to complete a placemaking survey which would also feed into the entire placemaking and design process.

“Placemaking is a proven way to generate creative and inspiring ideas for a community,” she said.

“The ideas which were being bounced around on Monday night demonstrate the high level of thinking from the community in the airport redevelopment program and the Town is looking forward to seeing the final outcomes of the placemaking for this project.

“The airport placemaking survey is designed to complement the workshops and asks similar questions to those raised during the sessions.

“The Town is hoping that the redeveloped airport will reflect Port Hedland’s unique character and capture the exciting ideas discussed at the workshop.”
